Stars Drop A Thriller to La Ronge

Saturday afternoon the Battlefords North Stars and La Ronge Ice Wolves treated fans in Weyburn to an exciting display of first-class competitive hockey. Unfortunately for the Stars, the end result stings greatly as the Wolves won it 5-4.

The first period belonged to the Ice Wolve's special teams. Marc-Andre scored twice, including an end-to-ender that had everybody's jaws dropped. Tanner Schwab had the lone tally for the Stars.

The Stars bounced back in a big way in period two. Colin Phaneuf scored short-handed and on the power-play and Tanner Schwab chipped in his second of the game, and the Stars skated to the lockeroom up 4-3.

Early in the third, the Stars nearly went up 5-3 but Tony Oak was denied by Adam Bartko from in close.

Halfway through the third, Graham Hildebrand made an absolutely glorious save on Marc-Andre Carre from point-blank range, but seconds later after the following faceoff Travis Eggum tied the score at 4.

Exactly five minutes later the Wolves grabbed the game's final goal. Aaron Enns buried one off his own rebound on a wrap-around to make the score 5-4.

With that, the Stars wrap up the Showcase with a 1-1 record. The Stars don't play next until Friday at home against Notre Dame.

The Stars return home from a lengthy road-trip with a record of 14-18-1-1.

Really solid effort from these boys this weekend! Great goaltending, lots of offensive strength, and better showing from the D. Still caught on some 2 on 1s that cost a few important goals but that's something they can keep working on. Another area to improve on is shutting down the number one line (I think that comes a bit more from the coaching though). Tonight one line scored four of the five goals. La Ronge is a very tough team to beat though - these boys should be proud.

Calm down, I was at both games this weekend. One of the goals wasn't on the powerplay. And that doesn't matter, they should be shut down regardless.

Can anyone explain to me why Grodin isn't on the ice with 1:30 to go, down by a goal and the goalie pulled? He only has 21 goals on the season, and the Stars are looking to tie the game. I would love to ask Pearson what his reasoning behind this is. I can understand if we're up by a goal, and we're trying to preserve the win, but this makes absolutely no sense. If Pearson wants to win, he better stop rolling 4 lines, and put the proper personnel out there.

Thanks tips I'm sure Ken welcomes your advice!!! haha

All you guys do is bitch, Pearson should play Hildy, Birch should be traded, Dan loves Birch, Ken is from Winnipeg so Birch stays, well Pearson isn't from Winnipeg just fyi,the 4th line gets 5 shifts a game blah blah blah careful what you wish for!!!

Nobody said Pearson was from Winnipeg, but he coached Birch there.

oooooooo!! Birch played 1 game for him as a 16 year old in Winnipeg. Oh I guess that means they are bonded for life now. Seriously?!! THAT's your logic for Pearson keeping Birch?!! Seriously?!! How about the fact that Birch plays with more heart and intensity than anyone out there!! I used to enjoy reading this blog but WOW!! It's getting ridiculous!! You guys call yourselves fans?!! Fans stick with their team (players and coaches) no matter how they are doing! And those of you who aren't fans; go post your crap on someone else's blog!! And whats's with all the anonymous!! If you have something worth saying at least be man enough to own up to it!
Stars; you should be proud of the way you played this weekend! Each and every one of you! And coaches you should be proud too. You are real contenders!!
And I whole-heartedly agree with Brad B. Be careful what you wish for!!

I think what that person was trying to say is that all of us from Battleford see the games and see what kind of player Birch really is. Of course you're going to be pro-Birch when you're from MB. You're probably his friends or relatives.

Ive missed 2 games since Kyle has been in the Battlefords. Hes actually a very good goalie. When he played AAA he was the best goalie in the league. Hes played in the dub and also played for Manitobia at the Canada winter games which he got the goalie of the tournament there. We're very lucky to have a guy of Kyles calibre in the Battlefords.
