Cougars Wrap Up Road Trip With a Loss in Portland.

Tuesday night in Portland, the Prince George Cougars were defeated 8-1 by the Portland Winterhawks. Brendan Leipsic scored three goals and added two assists and the Winterhawks finished the game four-for-five on the power play.

Portland led 2-0 after one period. The Winterhawks opened the scoring early at 2:52 when Ty Rattie buried his 51st goal of the season. He skated from the left wing into the high slot area and beat Devon Fordyce glove side.

Brad Ross then made it 2-0 at 9:40 of the first when he skated up the middle of the ice, and fired a shot past Devon Fordyce from the high slot area.

In the second period the Cougars got into some penalty trouble and it cost them. Marcel Noebels, Joseph Morrow, Derrick Pouliot and Brendan Leipsic all scored power play goals in the second. Leipsic added another goal at even strength.

The Cougars lone goal game courtesy of Troy Bourke to make the game 3-1 at 5:56 of the second. Bourke knocked home a Jarrett fontaine rebound for his 12th of the season and his second in as many games. That goal also helped Bourke tie his point total from last season (42 points).

Portland took a 7-1 lead into the third period. Brendan Leipsic completed his hat-trick off a two-on-one rush at the 7:52 mark of the third period.

In the end the Cougars were outshot 40-27. Portland finished four-for-five on the power play while the Cougars went scoreless on their only opportunity.

The Cougars record now sits at 19-38-0-2 which still leaves them just two points back of seventh place in the Western Conference standings.

Next up for the Cougars, an extremely important weekend at home with the Victoria Royals. Victoria currently holds a two-point edge on the Cougars in the Western Conference, and a win Friday would put the Cougars back into the top eight.
