Tuesday night in Prince George, Emerson Etem and Hunter Shinkaruk teamed up for five combined points as the Medicine Hat Tigers edged the Prince George Cougars 3-2. Shinkaruk scored twice while Emerson Etem tallied three helpers. The Cougars got their goals from Troy Bourke and Caleb Belter, along with 41 saves from Drew Owsley.
It was 1-0 Medicine Hat after one. The only goal of the period came on a power play when Shinkaruk converted a back-door pass from Matthew Konan. Shinkaruk’s 41st goal of the season gave his team the 1-0 lead.
Prince George had two really good chances in the first, but both Daulton Siwak and Caleb Belter were unable to beat Tyler Bunz from in close.
The visitors took a 2-0 lead early in the second when Alex Theriau notched his third of the season while short-handed. The Cougars were checked off the puck in the defensive zone, and Theriau walked in from the point and converted off a pass from Dylan Bredo.
Troy Bourke made it a 2-1 game after he weaved his way through several defenders before placing a back-hander past Tyler Bunz for his 14th of the season. Bourke has scored in back-to-back games, and has scored four goals in his last five games overall.
90 seconds later the Tigers regained their lead when Emerson Etem and Hunter Shinkaruk combined for Shinkaruk’s 42nd goal of the season. The Tigers would take their 3-1 lead into the third.
For a third consecutive night, the Cougars made a third period charge. Caleb Belter was able to beat Tyler Bunz for his fifth of the year, and all of a sudden the Cougars were down 3-2 with just over five minutes to play.
Unfortunately for the Cougars their comeback bid once again fell just short, and the Tigers held on for the victory.
Prince George finished zero-for-two on the man advantage while the Medicine Hat Tigers were one-for-two. The Tigers outshot the Cougars 44-21. Drew Owsley was sharp for the Cougars stopping 41 shots faced, including several key saves off of Emerson Etem who was unable to build on his 53 goals this season.
The Cougars will get another crack at the Tigers tomorrow night (Wednesday) at CN Centre.
