Keys to the Game - Cougars vs. Blazers

First off, I want to once again wish all of you a Happy New Year! I hope you're not too fuzzy this morning and are ready to enjoy tonight's matchup between the Prince George Cougars and Kamloops Blazers.

Here are some keys to the game tonight for Prince George:

1) The power play. The Cougars have not been properly rewarded for their efforts as of late on the man-advantage. If the Cougars can get their power play going while still maintaining their strong penalty-kill, they'll put themselves in a position to succeed.

2) Keep Ranford, Schaber, and Herrod in check. The Kamloops Blazers have recently acquired 20-year-old forward Brandon Herrod who is supposed to join Brendan Ranford and Chase Shaber on the Blazers' top line. The Cougars will need to be especially aware of these three and will need to minimize their time and space.

3) Discipline. The Blazers come into tonight's game with the league's fifth ranked power play (%23.6). If the Cougars can play five-on-five with Kamloops they'll give themselves a great chance to win.

4) Score first. When the Cougars score the first goal they hold a record of 11-5-0-1. Add the fact that Drew Owsley seems to play his best hockey when his team is leading. If the Cougars can get an early lead, Drew Owsley makes it extremely difficult for opponents to claw their way back.

Enjoy the game tonight.
