Cougars - Blazers Preview.

The Prince George Cougars kick of 2012 with a 6:00 showdown with the Kamloops Blazers. Tonight’s game marks the sixth meeting of the season between these B.C. Division rivals. Prince George has a 2-3-0-0 record so far in the season series.

Overview:

The Kamloops Blazers are currently first in the B.C. Division. The Blazers are 25-10-1-2 on the season and are 5-3-0-2 in their last games. The Blazers are coming off a loss to Calgary on Friday.

Who’s Up Front:

The Kamloops Blazers offense can come at you in waves. Seven of their forwards have registered over 30 points this season. Leading the charge is 19-year-old Brendan Ranford. Ranford leads the Blazers with 44 points in 35 games. Ranford is tied with Colin Smith and Dylan Willick for the team lead in goals with 19.

Who’s on D:

The offensive catalyst for the Blazers on defense is Austin Madaisky. The 19-year-old from Surrey has scored nine goals and has 30 points on the season.

Who’s in Goal:

The Kamloops Blazers have two very capable goaltenders in Cole Cheveldave and Cam Lanigan. Cheveldave has been getting a ton of starts as of late and holds a record of 17-5-1-2 this season. His goals against average is 2.72 and his save percentage is .906.

X-Factor:

The Kamloops Blazers will get their first look at newly acquired forward Brandon Herrod. The Blazers acquired Herrod earlier this week from the Prince Albert Raiders. Through 40 games this season, the 20-year-old has scored 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points.

Overview:

The Prince George Cougars are coming off a 5-1 loss to the Vancouver Giants. The Cougars had their three-game road winning streak snapped in the process. The Cougars are 5-5-0-0 in their last 10 games.

Who’s Up Front:

17-year-old forward Troy Bourke is playing some of his best hockey of the season. Bourke is in the midst of a six-game point streak and during that span has recorded one goal and six assists. The Cougars need Bourke and his linemates to have a big night if they want to get two points in Kamloops.

Who’s on D:

Success tonight will depend on the depth and consistency of the Cougars on defense. The Cougars need to minimize the shots on Drew Owsley, and they’ll need to do so by blocking shots, taking away passing lanes and keeping the Blazers to the outside. Cougars captain Jesse Forsberg is still without a goal this season, and perhaps tonight is the night that he gets his first.

Who’s in Goal:

Drew Owsley is playing his best hockey of the season. He’s 7-4-0-0 in his last 11 starts and has truly given the Cougars a chance to win every night. Owsley shutout the Blazers 1-0 back on September 24th and made 32 saves in the process. A similar effort may be needed tonight.

X-Factor:

The Cougars power play is on the verge of breaking out in a big way. They haven’t been able to score in their last 10 opportunities, but it is certainly not for a lack of chances. If the Cougars can take advantage of their power plays while maintaining their successful penalty-kill, the Cougars will give themselves every opportunity to win tonight’s game.
