Smoke and flames were shooting into the air in Kindersley Friday morning. A massive blaze erupted at the town's arena.

At least 60 firefighters were working to stop the fire from spreading. However, witness Ed Fugle tells News Talk Radio he believe its a lost cause.

"The whole thing is totally in flames, its a hundred feet in the air," Fugle said from the scene at 10:30 am. "There's two skating rinks - one goes north and south and the other goes towards the east. The one on the east isn't on fire yet, as far as I can tell. But it's hooked right onto this other one that's almost ready to collapse to the ground."

The devestating fire couldn't come at a worse time. The complex is currently hosting the provincial Scotties Tournament Of Hearts. No word yet on what the contingency plan will be.

The rink fire has prompted the evacuation of Kindersley's high school. Staff and students at Kindersley Composite School have been evacuated to the Kindersley Mall.

A representative says they followed their emergency plan, and will have activities for students until the end of the school day. Ironically, the arena complex is the normal rendezvous point in an emergency.

The elementary school is half a block away, and at this point it's not being evacuated.
