A forgetful night for the Mustangs, yet a memorable one for Star's forwards Blake Peake and Chad Filteau. Peake netted a hat-trick and Filteau scored his first two as a North Star in a 7-1 victory for the Stars over the visiting Melfort Mustangs.
Woody Klassen (5) opened the scoring at 13:50 of the first period on a point-shot that went through the legs of Mustang's D-Man Lee Christiensen and goaltender Chris Ward.
Late in the first period, the Stars got into penalty trouble, and Kyle Birch at one point was using Cody Folstad's hockey-stick to defend a 5-3 Melfort power-play, but the 'Stangs were unable to capitalize and the period ended with the Stars up 1-0.
The second period was all Battlefords. Blake Peake (20) scored his first of the game at 2:49 of the frame on a breakaway. Brody Malek (7) scored his third goal in three games at 11:49. Then Chad Filteau (18) and Blake Peake (21) added goals within the next three minutes to put the Stars up 5-0 after 40 minutes.
Halfway through the third, Blake Hietela scored for Melfort on a power-play, but Peake (22) and Filteau (19) would add scores for the Stars, and the game ended with a 7-1 final.
The Stars finished 3-7 on the power-play, and netminder Kyle Birch made 34 saves in the victory.
The win for the Stars moves them into a second-place tie with the La Ronge Ice Wolves. As luck would have it, the Stars are in La Ronge this weekend for a back-to-back series which could very well decide which of the two teams gets home-ice advantage in the playoffs.
This weekend is going to be incredibly exciting, hope you're able to be a part of it somehow.
