The Prince George Cougars showed some strong resolve on Saturday and were rewarded with a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings at a neutral-site game in Jasper. Shane Pilling and Troy Bourke scored late third period goals, and the Cats fought back from a 1-0 defecit to earn the victory.
The Edmonton Oil Kings struck first at 17:15 of the first period. Under aged defenceman Dyson Mayo scored a power-play goal to put the Oil Kings ahead.
Neither team was able to score in the second period, and the third period proved to be difficult also. The Prince George Cougars outshot Edmonton 17-2 in the third.
With two minutes remaining, the Cougars still trailed. But their resilience finally paid off and Shane Pilling tied the score at 1-1 for Prince George. 54 seconds later Troy Bourke notched his first of the preseason to give the Cats a 2-1 lead. It was a lead that they would not surrender.
Drew Owlsey stopped all seven shots he faced in the final half of the game, and Tyler Santos made 11 of 12 saves in the first-half.
Special teams did not prove to be a deciding factor for either team. Prince George finished zero-for-10 on the powerplay. Edmonton went one-for-five.
The Prince George Cougars improve their preseason record to 1-2-1. Their next preseason matchup goes Wednesday against Kamloops.
