Now the real season begins!
Friday night in Prince George, the Prince George Cougars fell 7-1 to the Kamloops Blazers. Matthew Needham scored twice, and added two helpers for Kamloops, while Tim Bozon had a goal and three assists.
The Blazers led 2-0 after 20 minutes. Bozon opened the scoring at 17:52, and Cole Ully followed with his first of two goals at the 19 minute mark of period one. The shots on goal were 14-3 favouring Kamloops after one.
The Cougars had great jump to start the second period but were unable to beat Taran Kozun. The trio of Spencer Asuchak, Troy Bourke and Brock Hirsche had some great chances, but simply could not capitalize.
Matthew Needham increased the Kamloops lead with two unanswered goals in two minutes and eight seconds.
John Odgers did his best to spark the Cougars by dropping the gloves with Blazers defenceman Tyler Hansen. Odgers was definitely mis-matched in terms of size, but held his own. It worked. Seconds later Troy Bourke and Spencer Asuchak skated in on a two-on-one and Asuchak converted on a Troy Bourke pass to make the score 4-1. For the 20-year-old Asuchak, it was his first goal of the preseason.
Cole Ully notched his second of the game at 17:31 of the second to put the score at 5-1. After two periods Kamloops held a 27-13 shot advantage.
Blazers defencemen Brady Gaudet and Josh Connolly added third period markers to clinch the victory for Kamloops.
Drew Owsley played the full 60 minutes for Prince George, and surrendered seven goals on 34 shots faced. Taran Kozun stopped 32 of 33 shots faced for Kamloops.
The Blazers finished one-for-five on the powerplay while Prince George went zero-for-five.
With that, the preseason comes to a close. The Cougars finish with a record of 1-3-1-0. On a positive note, the Cats open the season against the same Kamloops Blazers on September 24th in Kamloops. The Cats will look for redemption when two points are on the line.
