Luhning on the Sports-Fix Tonight.

A couple of things that I want to hit on today:

First off, I want to let you know that Star's defenceman Brody Luhning will be a guest on the Co-Op Leisure Time Sports Fix tonight at 8 PM. Luhning is enjoying a fine rookie campaign with the Stars, and was recently named to the CJHL Top Prospects Game coming up in Dauphin next week. Even better for Luhning is the fact that his teammates and good friend Kyle Hall was also invited. Together Luhning and I will discuss next week, and as well talk about his transition to the Battlefords from Swift Current.

My second guest will be La Ronge play-by-play man, Daniel Fink. Fink is in his first year as the Wolve's broadcaster, and so far (by all accounts) is doing a bang-up job. Together we'll discuss the Bauer Conference's top team, and we'll preview the SJHL Showcase matchup between the Stars and the La Ronge Ice Wolves for Saturday.

----

The month of November saw some peaks and valleys for the Stars, but overall I think the team has to be feeling pretty good about themselves as November winds down. They have created some separation between themselves and Nipawin, and are one lengthy winning streak away from challenging the teams ahead of them in the standings. What hurts the Stars right now is the number of games they've played in comparison to some of the others. Only Yorkton has played in more games than the Stars.

Some November highlights included:

- The 6-5, OT victory over Estevan when Woody Klassen scored with .8 seconds to go.
- The 7-4 victory at home against Humboldt.
- Hall and Luhning being named to the Top Prospect's Game.
- Keith Grondin, and Brody Luhning receiving Player of the Week Awards through the SJHL.

At the end of the day, the Stars are close to being a .500 hockey team, and can hopefully build off of that fact heading into this week and some tough matchups.

-----

A lot of fans have have asked me what the situation was like in Flin Flon Saturday, and I did my best to answer them in my prior post.

The bottom line is this:

Flin Flon is a GREAT place to watch and call a hockey-game. One of my favourites, in fact. If each SJHL market had that type of passion, we'd be in tremendous shape. That being said, there is definitely another side to the equation, and it not only goes for Flin Flon, but the entire SJHL as a whole.

If you pay for your ticket, you are absolutely entitled to cheer, boo and heckle to your heart's content. But certainly I think a line needs to be drawn when a small minority of fans start using vulgar language and they themselves take attention away from the game. I've seen this type of behavior all over the SJHL, but Saturday in Flin Flon things were definitely magnified. Fans need to be reminded that these games are generally filled with families, and the game has no place for fans bullying the players and filling the arena with loud and constant profanity. Security needs to do their part to make sure that their hockey environments are suitable for all-comers.

On the other side, the players need to expect these types of things from time to time, and under no circumstances should a player take their frustrations out on the fans. Again I maintain that the Star's seemed (from my vantage point at least) to handle themselves with dignity and class after the game on Saturday, and I'd say 90 percent of the Flin Flon faithful did the same.

I think you're being a little one sided on this Dan. I'm a Stars fan but have friends who were at the Flin Flon game and they told me that some of the Stars players (Birch and Cech especially) were out of control and that Ken wasn't doing anything about it. There are always going to be crazy fans out there but the coach needs to control his players and these kids need to rise above it. You can't do anything about the losers who have nothing better to do than taunt teenaged kids but every person on the Stars bench needs to be the bigger man and turn the other cheek and focus on the GAME.

Are you kidding me????? Do you think Cech and Birch acted that way because they had nothing better to do????? They were provoked by idiotic fans who should be banned from that rink!!!! Those fans were behaving beyond crazy, perhaps the Flin Flon organization should man up and do something about it already!

But that's not going to happen. And heckling happens everywhere, in every league, at every level. Of course it's not right and of course these losers shouldn't be allowed to do this but you have to look at what you're dealing with here: a bunch of drunk idiots who have nothing better to do than sit in a Flin Flon hockey rink and attempt to feel good about themselves by teasing a bunch of kids, and hockey players who are supposed to be disciplined MEN representing their communities. I expect stupid behaviour from fans in Flin Flon but I expect our boys to act better. Giving them a reaction is exactly what they want and only makes things worse. If they would have shook it off and had concentrated instead on winning the game, they would have really shown those Flin Flon fans. Instead they (Birch, Cech, and Ken from what I've heard) act like idiots and make the whole team look JUST AS BAD as Flin Flon.

You said it yourself ": a bunch of drunk idiots who have nothing better to do than sit in a Flin Flon hockey rink and attempt to feel good about themselves" Thats were your info is coming from. Anonyomous you state you had friends there, you didnt see it and Dan did. So they were drunk idiots who have nothing better to do, your gonna trust them over Dan? Come on give your head a shake.

My friends weren't the drunk idiots, they're Stars fans who told me how the Stars players reacted. I'm not trusting any drunk idiots, maybe you should actually read what I wrote. And think about what you're saying, drunk idiots vs our hockey team. Our boys should know better than to engage in that kind of crap. By fighting back you're just giving the Flin Flon fans what they want. Ken should have enough control over his team and the team should be disciplined enough not to get into fights with fans, that is just GARBAGE.

Well, the Stars received a suspension (Sparrow) and a fine after the game in Flin Flon. I don't fault Travis for the fight. I just think he could have waited a few minutes.

Re: Anonymous 5.

Where did you read about the Stars fighting with fans?

Dan O'Connor said...

I suppose you meant verbally fighting? Because there was no physical exchange between players and fans.

Proper Security I Stress The Word Proper.I Think The Leaque Should Be Addressing This Problem .There Should Be Someone Going To These Games And Monitoring What Is Going On.This Kind Of Behavior Is Unexceptable In Any Rink. What Went On In Flin Flon Is A Good Example .Fans Like That Should Have Been Kicked Out And Everything Would Have Been Fine.

Last season I attended a Flin Flon Laronge game in Flin Flon and the result was the same. Laronge won the game and fans were throwing things at the icewolve players, they were swearing, doing graphic hand gestures to the players. It was absolutely disgusting. Of course some of the Laronge players said things and of course it was there fault. It was an absolute joke there and the security saw everything that happened and didnt do anything about it. I felt very bad for Laronge because they were trying to get off the ice and fans were yelling swearing, throwing things at them. The icewolves were professional and tried there best but of course a player is going to say something or do something when fans are like that. The worst part of the whole thing was where everything was happening there was a dad and his 2 kids and they had to witness this whole situation. It was disgusting and I was an out sider looking in and I was very upset with what I saw. These are young men with lots of emotions going through there heads, and if some fan starts throwing objects at you or your team and starts yelling crude things, its hard to just walk away and not do anything. They need better security there, not season ticket holders that are just as bad as the fans.

I agree with all of you - these fans are ridiculous, Flin Flon or the SJ needs to do something about them. All I'm saying is that in the meantime the Stars need to play with class. Dan, I'm not referring to any physical fighting but I think engaging with those fans in any way is unnecessary. The boys need to learn to focus on the game and tune out all the other crap because they're likely going to have to deal with that kind of stuff for the rest of their careers. I really think our boys could have won that game. Those crazy fans took the game from the Stars and the Stars let them take it. More focus, discipline, and concentration from the Stars and I think there would have been a very different outcome. You can't always control what goes on in the stands but you can control how you react to it.
