Wednesday night in Melfort, the Battlefords North Stars used strong special-teams and even stronger goaltending to earn a 3-2 victory over the Melfort Mustangs on the road.
It was the first road victory for the Stars since October 19th. Blake Tatchell had a three point night and Kyle Birch made 33 saves for his third win of the year
The Stars did get off to a great start. They struggled on two early power-plays, and at one point were being outshot 10-2. Kyle Threndyle opened the scoring at 12:25 of the first period for Melfort.
The Stars tied it shortly thereafter when Blake Tatchell fed Cody Folstad back-door for his fourth of the year. Folstad's goal was scored seconds after Brett Kipling's penalty had ended. Keith Grondin then potted his 15th goal at 18:40 on a power-play to give the Stars a 2-1 lead after one.
Mid-way through the second, the Stars took advantage of another man advantage. Blake Tatchell (initially credited to Keith Grondin) beat Charles Corsi to send the Stars up by two. Melfort bridged the gap late in the period on Jesse Mireau's 15th goal. Kyle Birch made several key stops in the middle frame to keep the Stars ahead.
Another second period highlight was a spirited fight between the Star's Robbie Newton and Melfort's Tyler Bortsmayer.
The Stars killed off two early penalties in the third and were able to hold on for the win.
Up next for the Stars: a home battle with Estevan tonight at 7:30. The game can be seen live on Access 7 starting at 7:15.
