Melfort Haults the Stars Winning Streak at Home.

Sunday night at the Civic Center, the Melfort Mustangs halted the North Stars home-ice winning streak. The Mustangs used solid defense and an effective power-play to pace the North Stars 5-2.

The North Stars opened the scoring early on, as Blake Peake banged home a Dominic Perrault rebound.

Melfort quickly responded at the eight minute mark thanks to two quick goals from 20-year-old forward Blake Hietela.

Josh Daley’s 10th of the season tied it for the Stars mid-way through the first, but from then on out it was all Melfort.

Regan Nabseth scored at 4:25 of the second, and Devon Stillar later added a power-play marker, and from there the ‘Stangs were in complete control. Nabseth added his second of the game into an empty net late in the third period.

The North Stars faltered on the man-advantage going a dismal 1-10, and many times failed to penetrate the Melfort defense.

For the Stars, it was a tough loss given the fact that they had previously won nine in a row at the Civic Center. The loss moves the Stars record to 12-8-1-0 (2nd Bauer Conference). The Mustangs improve to 8-8-2-1 (5th Bauer Conference).

“We were lethargic tonight,” said Ken Pearson after the game. “Credit to Melfort, they played a strong game tonight.”

Next up for the North Stars is a battle in Nipawin Tuesday night against the Hawks. The puck drops at 7:30. You can catch the game live on CJNB/CJNS and www.cjnb.com.
