Saturday in Melfort, the Battlefords North Stars finally solved the Melfort Mustangs. The final score was 5-2, and the Stars arguably played their first 'full 60' of the season.
Ward Szucki (6) scored 44 seconds into the game to give the Stars a lead. He received a pass from Tony Oak, darted by the defence and out-waited Jordan Washburn.
Melfort tied it on a powerplay goal from Brant Henry-Norton mid-way the first period.
The Stars would regain their lead thanks to Troy Watt. Watt scored his third of the year after Blake Tatchell fed him perfectly in the high slot.
The Stars outshot the 'Stangs 13-6 after one.
Early in the second the Mustangs tied the score. Lee Christianson scored his first ever goal in the SJ after some nice work by Gary Childerhose to force a two-on-one. This goal was also scored on the powerplay.
After the tying goal, the Mustangs came in on another two-on-one and Graham Hilldebrand STUNNED Brant Henry-Norton point blank! This was a real game saver. Easily the best save he's made all season.
Late in the period, the Stars went to the power-play of their own and Jesse Lebreton rifled home a shot from the left-point for his seventh of the season.
Moments later, Blake Tatchell scored to give the Stars a s-2 lead.
After 40 minutes the Stars were outshooting Melfort 28-12.
Boyd Wakelin added to the mix with a goal in the opening minutes of the third and from there the Stars were in full control.
The Mustangs couldn't get any offence going and when they did get shots towards the net, The Stars defenders kept blocking them.
In the end the Stars outshot Melfort 38-15 and cruised to victory. The Stars improve to 14-9-1-0 and now trail Flin Flon by one point in the Bauer Conference.
Cudos to Kyle Birch for providing some great color commentary tonight!
