Mustangs 3 - Stars 1

Kyle Birch played brilliantly, but the Star's offensive went cold and the Melfort Mustangs earned a 3-1 win Tuesday night at the Civic Center.

The Melfort Mustangs fired 47 shots on Birch, who positioned himself well and made several difficult saves look easy. It was a true bounce-back effort after three bad games prior.

The Mustangs received their offence from Jesse Mireau (3), Sean Aschim (1), and Stef Harrington(3). Cole Gibson added two assists for Melfort who snapped a two-game losing streak with their victory over the Stars.

Cody Antos scored the lone goal for the Stars early in the third period. For Antos, it was his first SJHL goal.

After the game, Star's coach Ken Pearson praised the efforts of his younger players. He said that the trio of Tanner Schwab, Shayne Morrissey and Tim Rollins were probably the best line for the Stars. Kyle Hall, Cody Antos and Robbie Newton weren't too ar behind.

Pearson also liked what he saw from both Keith Grondin and Brandon Esposito.

With the loss the Stars fall to 0-5-1-1. They'll continue to strive for that first victory Friday night when they welcome the defending league champion La Ronge Ice Wolves to town.

Panic button time?

I didn't see the game tonight, but to me it sounds like that time is getting near for this team.

We all knew the defense was going to be an issue, but I don't think anyone could have envisioned that it would be this bad.

I mean, you can't give up that many shots, especially in your own building.

Something has to change with this team, and if anyone thinks that "getting Hildy" back from injury is going to be that kick in the pants, they are sorely mistaken.

So we keep trading away our vets and we keep losing... Where's the logic???

Pearson next to be sent out of town?

kyle birch was outstanding tonite. He has done nothing but play his heart out for going on three years now, I thought he played good against weyburn as well. Some people need to look beyond the crease, adding Graham hildebrand will mean absolutely nothing unless the boys help him, some that Kyle Birch nor Alex sirard has had.

Re: Post 2 -

If you're going to get the same effort/performance from a complacent 20-year-old or an inspired rookie, wouldn't you rather give the younger player the ice-time?

Re: Post 3 -

Pffftt..

Re: Post 4 -

Kyle was Excellent. No denying it. But EVERYONE was bad against Weyburn, goaltending included. The team and Kyle can definitely walk away from the Melfort game feeling better about themselves, but I can promise you they won't until the wins start coming.

They are getting closer. But they need to see more out of the veterans. The 19 & 20 year olds have to step up. There is only so much a coach can do. This team is blessed with terrific coaching but the players have to come to play and want it. The coach has to be frustrated with this team knowing all to well what they are capable of. It seems that some of them just don't want it bad enough. The coach can't win the game for you, they simply have to want it more. Last night's score was close, I do believe the win is on the way.

Interesting.......when a team wins, the first one standing in line to take the accolades and give the interviews is the coach. Yet when they lose...it's all about the players. C'mon, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the issues go far deeper than the players bring "heart" to the ice. Ha! They need to be taught, they need systems that work, they need inspiration and guidance. Contrary to the previous post - there's only so much the players can do! Even if they are vets.

no wonder we are losing if Pearson thinks the young lines were the best on the ice. Maybe he should spend a couple of games in the stands and see what really is going on during the game. That was a ridiculous statement.

Maybe the coach can't win it for you but he sure can lose it for you.

I find it interesting; I always thought that the players took the credit for the win and the coach takes the heat for the losses. Ken always does the post game interviews with Dan after a loss to face the heat; while Atch does them after a victory. Seeing Birch have a great game like that is encouraging. We know we have offense; they showed that in the first few games; and now we can start to feel more confident about our goaltending. The offense will come back; the boys are just a little frustrated right now (as are the coaches and as are the fans) Now that its coming together we should start to see some numbers in the win column. Maybe as fans we should stop playing the blame game and keep supporting our Stars instead of picking them to pieces.

Great take from Miss.

Agree with you 100% Miss, very well said! Every is so quick to point fingers at the coaches or vets or rookies!! Give me a break, the constant blame game is not helping anyone.

Really now, can we please call a spade a spade. We are getting what the vets are capable of. Oak and Tomac will never be goal scorers, they are role players, so them getting 30 minutes of ice cuts the stars chances of scoring down to half the game. They are doing what they are capable of! And I challenge anyone to differ on that. They are Ken's type of player and he makes the decisions for that and has to accept some responsibility for them being on the ice all the time. Are we trying to win games 1-0. Daley, Nuefeld, Perrault are gone. Miller is out, Tatchell cant do it all himself. Woody gives 100% every night, and Folstad is average. Goaltending has been easily below average.

And holy man the shifts are waaaaaaayy too long to try and outwork the other team.

Looks like this season might be a rebuild where the stars just try and make the playoffs and go from there.

miss: You hit the nail on the head. 100% correct. Theres still lots of the season left. What doesnt kill you, only makes you stronger.

Totally agree with that comment. We have NO goal scorers and haven't seen much solid goal tending. Those are two incredibly important aspects of the game. Everyone's complaining that Daley wasn't gritty enough and some of the other vets don't have enough heart but if you can't score goals and you can't keep the puck out of the net, you have a HUGE problem.

I do feel for these kids they are gripping there sticks so hard right now, there must have been atleast 5 times when a player had a shot at the net in the slot and they figure that the perfect shot is the only one that will get into the net. They are trying for the perfect pass and shot when what they need right now is dirty goals with dirty efforts and shots from everywhere. Birch played great and defense played pretty good. The forwards are making huge strides and the best will yet to come. To who ever said that Pearson should be fired holy frick give your head a shake, what you want the Gary Clark days with nothing, there is alot of talent on these team and when they play as a TEAM it will get better.
GO STARS GO, as much as i like Bartko lets lit it up on him to start.
