Friday night in Weyburn, the Battlefords North Stars won their third consecutive game - A 6-5 decision over Weyburn. Colin Phaneuf led the way with two goals and an assist.
Coltyn Sanderson opened the scoring for Weyburn, but the Stars quickly countered with an equalizer. Rob Newton redirected a Woody Klassen point-shot through traffic to tie the game. Weyburn outshot the Stars 15-7.
Early in the second, Weyburn took a 2-1 lead thanks to another one from Sanderson. Colin Phaneuf countered with his first of the game moments later. Phaneuf received a Blake Tatchell pass and beat Mitch Kilgore blocker-side to tie the score.
The Stars grabbed their first lead mid-way through the second when Rob Newton tallied for a second time.
Rhys Thomas notched a power-play marker for Weyburn to even it up. From then on, the Stars took control.
Keith Grondin scored his first of a North Star on a power-play, and then Tony Oak scored his third of the year with 10 seconds left in the second to give the visitors a 5-3 lead.
Early in the third, Colin Phaneuf made a fancy toe-drag move, beat two defenders and buried another by Kilgore to give the Stars a 6-3.
From there, things got a little chippy. There were lots of penalties, a couple of short fights but the Stars held their command of the game.
Weyburn made it interesting in the final three minutes when the Stars seemingly eased up a bit. Keegan Bruce and Jesse Ross each scored goals to force the 6-5 score. The Stars weathered a late storm and pulled away with the win.
Graham Hildebrand stopped 29 of 34 shots in victory and improves his record to 3-0 on the year.
The Stars finished one for seven on the powet-play, but were able to kill off all but one of Weyburn's five chances.
