Even with strong goaltending, and a gutsy night on the PK, the Prince George Cougars dropped a 1-0 decision to the Tri City Americans on Friday night in Prince George. Adam Hughesman had the game’s only goal, and Eric Comrie made 17 saves for the shutout.
The first period was scoreless as both teams traded chances. The shots were 12-9 in favor of the Tri City Americans.
The Americans grabbed the game’s lone goal late in the second when Adam Hughesman buried a spin-around backhand shot that slid underneath both Jesse Forsberg and Drew Owsley. For Hughesman it was his 12th of the season, and it was scored on a five-on-three man advantage.
The Cougars had two power play opportunities in the third period, but were unable to beat Comrie, who turned aside four shots on both the second and third period.
Credit the Cougars penalty-killers for hanging in there, and also Drew Owsley for making 31 saves against his former team.
Friday’s game marked the Cougars debut for forward Campbell Elynuik and defenceman Reid Jackson who both logged key minutes at both ends of the ice. The Cougars also had Jesse Forsberg back in the lineup who provided the Cougars with a physical and emotional spark even in defeat.
The Cougars record drops to 3-7-0-1 on the season, but they’ll get another crack at Tri City tomorrow night at CN Centre.
