Better effort, same result for the Battlefords North Stars. Saturday night at the Civic Center, the Stars dropped a 4-3 game in a shootout to Melfort and remain winless on the season. Regan Nabseth had three points for Melfort and goaltender Charles Corsi was rock-solid when he had to be, especially in the shootout.
Special teams played a big role in the game. The Stars scored all three of their goals on the powerplay. The goals scored by Woody Klassen, Zach MacLellan and Blake Tatchell. Two of Melfort's three goals were also scored on the man-advantage.
Melfort's Jesse Mireau opened the scoring at 3:43 on the power-play. Regan Nabseth and Brody Haygarth recorded assists.
Zach MacLellan tied the score at 8:51 after he finished off a three-on-two. MacLellan added two assists to his evening later on.
Blake Tatchell continued his solid start with a goal at 18:02 (on the power-play). He tipped home a Woody Klassen point-shot to give the Stars a 2-1 lead.
Brody Haygarth tied it at 4:44 of the second period. Regan Nabseth tallied his second assist of the game in the process.
Back came the Stars on another power-play. This time it was Woody Klassen one-timing one home from the right-point. 3-2 Stars heading into the final period.
The Mustangs tied the game at 7:10 of the third period. Regan Nabseth skated into the slot and roofed a back-hand over the glove of Alex Sirard.
The Stars took some late penalties but were able to kill them off, and for the second time so far this season, overtime was needed.
Overtime solved nothing, and a shootout was required.
Brett Miller, Colin Phaneuf and Blake Tatchell were all denied by Melfort netminder Charles Corsi.
Cole Gibson and Justin Bardarson were stopped by Alex Sirard, but Brody Haygarth shovelled one through the legs on the third shot, and Melfort escaped the Civic Center with the victory.
An impressive weekend for the Mustangs who grabbed all four points up from grabs this weekend while the Stars managed one.
Up next for the Stars: The Weyburn Red Wings, Friday night at 7:30 from the Civic Center.
Goaltender Alex Sirard played well, even in defeat. But he didn't get any offensive help in the shootout, and Brody Haygarths goal in the third round prooved to be the winner.
Up next for the Stars - A home battle with the Weyburn Red Wings on Friday night.
