A playoff rivalry is rekindled this weekend when the Battlefords North Stars hit the road to face the Melfort Mustangs. Here's a preview for tonight's matchup:
Record: 1-2
Who's Up Front:
The Melfort Mustangs boast a lot of offensive depth. Leading that charge is 20-year-old forward Brody Haygarth. Haygarth was acquired from Flin Flon during the off-season as part of the future considerations for Deven Stillar. Haygarth has not dissapointed in the early-going. He's got four points in three games and shares the team lead in scoring with Regan Nabseth and Cole Gibson. Look for Haygarth to log a lot of ice-time, especially on the powerplay.
Who's on D:
Lee Christensen (91) is one of the steadiest most dependable defenceman in the SJHL. He's gifted offensively, but is even more reliable in his own end. The Star's top line can expect to see a lot of him tonight.
Who's in Goal:
Darrell Mann recently acquired 20-year-old netminder Charles Corsi who wasted no time in making a solid impression. Corsi surrendered just two goals in 40-minutes of play, and was the winning goalie in Melfort's victory over Yorkton. Mann also has Colin Fernandes, Jay Hudon and Jesse Ehnisz listed on his roster. At this point I don't have any confirmation on who gets the start.
X-Factor:
Tonight's X-Factor is forward Cole Gibson. Gibson was the most consistent forward against the Stars during last season's Bauer Conference Semi-Final, and I look for him to continue that trend tonight. Gibson is one of those kids who can completely fly under the radar, but at the end of the night he'll have three or four points. A strong game from Gibson could go a long way for the home team.
Record: 0-1-1-0
Who's Up Front:
Blake Tatchell has picked right up where he left off last season. In two games, Tatchell has tallied four points, and is showing a lot of confidence playing alongside Brett Miller and Colin Phaneuf. Keeping Tatchell off the score-sheet will be objective number one for Melfort tonight.
Who's on D:
Rookie Zach MacLellan scored his first SJHL goal during Tuesday's loss to Humboldt. The 18-year-old is a great skater, and has shown some chemistry alongside Woody Klassen. I look for these two to see a lot of action against Haygarth and company.
Who's in Goal:
With two games in two nights, I'd say it's likely that we see both Kyle Birch and Alex Sirard at some point this weekend. As for the order? I have not the slightest clue. Also, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if we saw one goalie play both nights. How's that for a nice, vague answer?
X-Factor:
Once again it's the Penalty-Kill. If the Stars can successfully start killing off some penalties they'll get their first win. So far through two games, the Stars have only managed to kill off six of 11 penalties. That statistic is obviously too low.
You can catch the game tonight on 1050 CJNB/102.3 FM CJNS or www.cjnb.com.

Another X Factor for the game would be the PP. 2 for 17 will get you no where. A flash back from last years playoff.
Dont be shocked if theres some changes happening. The stars are too good to not of won a game yet. The VETS are not producing and the goaltending is a joke. Goaltending wins championships. Dont be shocked to see Sirard start tomorrow.
